The Unique Characteristics of a Texas Hill Country Style Home

Housing industry watchdogs say that custom homes have continued to take a greater share of all new home starts over the past few years—2022 saw a 20% spike upward in one-of-a-kind residential construction. What better place to build the home of your dreams than the world-famous Texas Hill Country!

How is a Texas Hill Country style home different from other architectural styles? Well, much of the influence in the design and construction of a Texas Hill Country style home comes from the German immigrants who came to this part of Texas in the early 19th century. They brought with them a long-established practice of using existing landscape elements and materials, and, whenever possible, repurposing or reusing existing elements. Because limestone and timber were plentiful in the Texas Hill Country, they were used in the architecture, commonly for fireplaces, exposed wooden ceiling beams and hardwood floors. Local stone was also commonly used as floor tile.

The common exterior design features of a Texas Hill Country style home include:

  • Stone exteriors of local white Texas limestone
  • Metal roofing for durability and ease of maintenance, as well as resistance to temperature extremes
  • Gable roof lines, with sloping roofs that come together at a peak, allowing for high ceilings
  • Two-story construction, allowing homeowners a great view of the breathtaking landscape in the Texas Hill Country

What about Interior Design When You’re Building a Texas Hill Country Style Home?

Not surprisingly, the Germanic influence that characterizes the outside of a custom Texas Hill Country home can also be found in the rooms throughout the house. Traditional design elements commonly include:

  • Exposed wooden ceiling beams in most rooms
  • Stacked limestone walls
  • Dark hardwood floors that contrast with the walls and exude warmth and comfort
  • High ceilings
  • Large rooms and open spaces
